Typography
2025

Paleofracture is a modular blackletter-inspired hybrid typeface, created in response to Birmingham Design Festival’s 2025 brief of ‘Play’. The etymology of it’s name, while not being a word in itself, is a portmanteau of ‘Palaeography’ (the study of old writing) and ‘fractal’, representing the distinct gaps in the type and its medieval roots.

Falling into the calligraphic sector under the Vox Classification System, the typeface sits within the standards of both a graphic font and a blackletter font. It’s distinct ascenders and descenders in pairing with serifs on unconventional characters such as B and T emulate the visual cues one may associate with lowercase medieval type.
